New Kingdom Fortress Discovered In Sinai
From Biblical Archaeology Society · October 21, 2026

Excavations at Tell el-Kharouba, located near the modern border with Gaza, have revealed a significant Egyptian fortress used to guard the Way of Horus. This trade route was vital for connecting ancient Egypt to Levantine territories during the Late Bronze Age. According to the report, the fortress likely covered approximately 86,000 square feet and was designed to house a large number of soldiers.
Archaeologists identified a southern wall measuring nearly 350 feet long and 8 feet thick, featuring 11 defensive towers. Other findings include portions of northern and western walls, a 250-foot-long winding wall surrounding a residential area, and a large bread oven with preserved dough fragments. Artifacts recovered include pottery vessels, volcanic stones from the Aegean islands, and a pottery handle stamped with the name of Pharaoh Thutmose I.
Preliminary studies suggest the fortress underwent several stages of restoration and modification. Researchers noted that while a smaller fortress was found previously nearby, they hope future excavations will reveal a military port connected to this site.
