The Wiikwemkoong Unceded Territory in rural Ontario, Canada, has installed a small data center to modernize its recordkeeping and assert digital sovereignty. According to Chief Tim Ominika, the facility helps protect the community's legacy, including video recordings of Anishinaabe language speakers. The community is transferring information from a Microsoft data center in Toronto to this local system to ensure ownership, access, and control over their own data.

In addition to cultural preservation, the data center supports administrative services, health data, and public safety infrastructure. Chief Technology Officer Michael McCormick noted that the center supports a drone fleet and surveillance cameras used for monitoring forest fires, criminal activity, and finding missing persons. The project follows a 2022 flood that resulted in the loss of some digital records. While the drone program has faced some resident concerns regarding privacy, McCormick stated that all footage is stored locally.
